From Iaido to Kendo: Gremere Villacampa
Iaido was the first Martial Arts I got myself exposed to – that was more than 10 years ago. I taught myself the art by following videos on youtube but not long after I got frustrated – for the obvious reason of lacking a teacher. Not until a friend told me that A Japanese Martial art called Kendo is being taught nearby.

So without hesitation I joined Kendo which I immediately fell in love with right after. And since then I never stop immersing myself into training.


As I delved deeper into the training of kendo I found more similarities than differences between the two arts. Although it’s a completely different Martial art and mostly focuses on Kata, learning iaido deepens my understanding of kendo and vice-versa. It teaches how one properly behaves when handling a real sword. If utmost reverence and respect is given to an unapologetic and indiscriminate katana when practicing Iaido, imagine the depth of understanding one can attain if he approaches Kendo carrying the same mindset. My image of the shinai changed and every Kamae has a deeper meaning to me. After all I realized, the purpose of kendo is to discipline the human character through the applications of the principles of the Japanese sword.


Now, I practice kendo with the depth of Iaido and I practice Iaido with the foundations of Kendo. And someday I look forward to teaching these wonderful arts to the next generation.

Chiburi: A symbolic shaking of the blood from a fallen enemy. A fundamental part of every kata.

Noto: Returning of the sword to the scabbard. Noto should be performed cautiously as there is a possibility that a fallen enemy can still strike. So Noto should be exercised with Zanshin.

Reiho (Shinza E No Rei): This bow is performed towards the altar. The sword is transfered from left to right with blade facing down. The sword is a position where it is difficult to use it for attack. Performing this bow shows the person's sincerity.
