OUR HISTORY

In a quiet corner of Negros, where tradition meets modernity, lies a unique haven for those who dream of embodying the way of the samurai: the Negros Shiseikan Kendo Club. More than just a dojo, this club is a sanctuary where discipline, respect, and camaraderie thrive. It carries a story of resilience, growth, and unwavering dedication to the timeless art of kendo.

The roots of the Negros Shiseikan Kendo Club trace back 13 years ago, when the only purpose-built dojo was established, originally named OISCA BUDOJO. For a time, the dojo flourished, drawing in kendo enthusiasts who aspired to master this ancient Japanese martial art. However, life often throws unexpected challenges, and the dojo faced closure due to unfortunate circumstances.

Yet, like the samurai who rise after every fall, the dojo found a new champion in Jowash Saballero, now its Vice President. In 2017, his path crossed with Onose Sensei, a kendo Sensei whose teachings are rooted in the rich traditions of kendo from Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Together, they breathed new life into the club. Onose Sensei provided not only expert guidance but also the materials needed to restore the dojo, allowing it to once again become a place of learning and growth.

OUR LOGO

Our logo symbolizes a ひまわりhimawari or a sunflower. It embodies the core values of 至誠館 Shiseikan: “Shi” meaning highest, and “Sei” meaning sincerity. Just as the sunflower turns toward the sun, it symbolizes our unwavering pursuit of excellence and truth in Kendo. Its petals represent unity and harmony within our dojo, where each member strives for growth and contributes to the whole. Rooted in the traditions of the "Land of the Rising Sun," the sunflower reminds us to embody the samurai spirit, honorable and sincere in every step of our journey.

TAKEYASU ONOSE AND THE SPIRIT OF SAMURAI IN NEGROS

The Shiseikan Dojo stands as a beacon of traditional Japanese kendo in Negros, with its foundation deeply tied to the contributions of Onose Takeyasu Sensei, whose influence has shaped the kendo of Negros Island over the years. Onose Sensei’s kendo journey began under the guidance of Takeshi Ozawa, the director of the Mito Toubukan in Ibaraki Prefecture. Mito Toubukan is a historic dojo, renowned for its association with the All-Japan Youth Kendo Training Tournament. The Hanshi at this dojo represent the highest standards of kendo, and their teachings profoundly shaped Onose Sensei's approach to preserving the samurai spirit in kendo. In 1971, Onose Sensei joined the Ibaraki Prefectural Office Kendo Club, where he honed his skills. By 1976, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Satakekan, a dojo known for its "high-speed men technique," which led its practitioners to numerous tournament victories.[Read more...]

JOWASH SABALLERO: A JOURNEY OF DEDICATION AND EXCELLENCE IN KENDO

In 2017, Jowash Saballero’s path in kendo began when he met Takeyasu Onose Sensei, a Roku-dan (6th Dan) from Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Onose Sensei, a frequent visitor to the Philippines through OISCA’s cultural exchange program, introduced kendo training at the SHISEIKAN Dojo. Drawn to the discipline and philosophy of Japanese swordsmanship, Jowash became one of his earliest students and, in 2018, founded the OISCA Negros Kendo Club under his mentor's guidance. In February 2020, Jowash was invited to Japan by Onose Sensei for rigorous training under 8th and 7th Dan senseis. This experience refined his skills and teaching methods, enabling him to guide students from beginners to advanced practitioners. During this visit, he successfully earned his 1-Kyu certification under the All Japan Kendo Federation.[Read more...]
