Compared to the 2020 Regional Shinsa Seminar in Cebu, more Visayas-based Kendoka participated this year, representing the Dumaguete, Cebu, and OISCA Negros Kendo Clubs, with some attendees coming from Manila also joining.
Organized by the United Kendo Federation of the Philippines (UKFP), this series of seminars were organized in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to help Kendokas prepare for the kyu or dan examinations on the upcoming 1st Philippine Dan Shinsa.
“Ultimately the common theme from all the seminars is the enthusiasm that all the participants displayed. As this is a component of "ki" or spirit, we need to build up on this and maintain the momentum developed from these events,” said UKFP President Kristopher Inting.
“One thing that needs to be improved on is that the rust from not practicing during the pandemic is noticeable from many of the veteran participants. This just shows the need for everyone to practice, especially if they plan to take the shinsa in November,” he added.
Coming from the conclusion of the regionals, the Federation is now looking at recalibrating the shinsa seminars to concentrate on each grade to ensure that learnings are explicitly catered to the kendokas’ current level.
According to Inting, the Federation will consider the possibility of having one seminar just for lower kyu candidates (6kyu to 3kyu), a separate seminar for higher kyu and lower dan candidates (2kyu to 1kyu, and 1Dan to 2Dan), and another for 3Dan and 4Dan candidates.
“I would like to thank all the participants who attended all the seminars,” enthused Inting. "These events were for you, and we hope that you all learned what you need to do to improve your Kendo. I would also like to thank the sensei who helped out by teaching during the seminar and serving as judges for the mock shinsa held during the seminars."
The first Philippine Kendo Dan Shinsa is happening on 13 November 2022 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Upper Deck, 6th floor Ortigas Technopoint One, #1, Doña Julia Vargas Ave, Pasig, 1604 Metro Manila, Philippines.
